16: Writing and Setting

This is not about settings in my stories; this is all about where I write. And, as of now, it’s not at home.

I know I’m not alone in this, but my house is not currently a santuary for composition. For many this is because other humans occupy their time, mainly spouses and children. Not me. For others, their home is their income-based workspace. Nope. I teach in an elementary school, and I’ve tried with all my might to refrain from grading or planning at home. Am I inundated with chores and “to do” lists? Well…sort of, mostly self-imposed. I still don’t consider these my core issues.

No, my core issues reside in people. I feel that I write best with others around me.

Coffee shops vibe with me. The reverberation of sounds and low buzz activity resonate with my natural creative juices. Our Shut Up and Write sessions on Sundays and Mondays are particularly productive. HOWEVA…I’m a limited extrovert. I enjoy others, but I have never been a party guy. I’d rather go to a concert in a smaller venue than a packed amphitheater. Last month my school district held a social event at a local bowling alley. It was too much. I don’t want to zigzag through crowds of random people. I want to hear a conversation and not pretend with an occasional nod.

I should really give writing at my home another try. First I need a set up that makes me WANT to write at home. Writing at the kitchen table doesn’t cut it. I have the space. All I need is a vision (and funds). My Venmo handle is…just kidding!
